What is a charter school? Charter schools are publicly funded elementary or secondary schools that run autonomously from other public schools. Charter schools are monitored and accredited under the statewide testing and accountability system. Charter schools are financed by the same funds that traditional state schools receive. They operate with freedom from many regulations that apply to traditional public schools. Who can attend a charter school? Charter schools are public schools of choice. MLKCS has an open and fair admission policy. If more students apply than we can accommodate a lottery will be used to determine which students are accepted. Students not selected will be placed on our waiting list. What grade levels will be offered? MLKCS will offer pre- kindergarten thru 8th grade and special education services as needed. How old must a child be to enter pre- k? Students entering pre- k must be 4 years old by September 30th. Will a uniform be required? Yes, MLKCS believes uniforms are the most affordable option for families. Navy blue bottoms (pants, shorts, skirts, skorts, jumper dress) white polo style/button- down shirts. Seventh and Eight graders will wear red polo shirts.
Where are classes being held for the fall? MLKCS will use the former Edgar P. Harney School located at 2503 Willow Street as a temporary site.
